The penny black stamp was released during the reign of Queen Victoria and is considered to be the worlds first postage stamp.
It was the very first stamp that with an adhesive surface to enable it to be stuck onto a letter or package to signify that the postal charges had been paid to cover the cost of delivery.
The penny black stamp cost one penny and was first made available in May 1840. They were only available for about a year because of problems with the color because when the stamps were marked to show they had been used the marking was sometimes difficult to see allowing opportunities for fraud so a replacement Penny Red stamp was released in 1841.
The penny black is an exclusive stamp that all serious stamp collectors would be proud to own.
