The Penny Red stamp was released in 1841 during the reign of Queen Victoria to replace the Penny Black stamp that had been first issued the year before. There had been some problems with the cancellation stamps used on the penny black because the cancellation mark was difficult to see which led to stamps being used repeatedly.
The penny red stamp cost one penny and intially just like the penny black it came with no perforations and had to be cut from the sheet with scissors. Later perforations were introduced to make it easier to seperate the stamps. The penny red was printed by the same company thoughout it's issue life until 1879 when it was superseeded by the venetian red stamp which was printed by a different company. The penny red is a popular stamp with collectors and is easier to obtain and far more affordable than it's predecessor due to the number that were issued over the years.
